It's the simple things

For me, there really is so much joy to be found in the simple things in life. Like a glorious sunny spring walk around the grounds of Magdalen College, Oxford. Last Sunday Al and I packed up a picnic and headed out on foot with our cameras in search of spring. I'm pleased to say we found it in abundance, looking most glorious, basking in the beautiful sunshine.

There is a beautiful circular walk around the College grounds, with paths lined with daffodils and clusters of beautiful crocuses. I don't think anything lifts the spirits quite as much as golden daffodils aglow in the sunshine - yellow for me is the colour of happy. The perfect tonic after a winter of cold and grey.

We even found a Fritillary or two, which had popped up early, encouraged by all the lovely sunshine and warmth.

I love the randomness of where the crocuses pop up - little clusters of happiness all lit up, nestling amongst the daffodils and the pretty purple Scilla Siberica flowers. Of course it meant getting low down with my camera to get the best angles - I'm very good at getting in the zone when I have a vision of what I want to capture - but unfortunately this often means that I'm not really thinking about what I'm asking my poor body to do to capture said shot. I was limping around for a few days after this beautiful walk - a mild case of spring flower strain ;)

The beautiful sunshine created some beautiful shadows and patterns with the Magdalen College architecture too.

A day of warmth and joy. It really is the simple things :)

Sunshine, sea, sand and pretty pastel beach huts - what could be more perfect?

On a bit of a whim, Al and I headed off for a daytrip to the seaside on Sunday. Lovely sunny Sunday! It was the kind of day just crying out for adventure, especially as we emerge from our grey winter slumber. So we packed up some lunch and drove down to the beautiful Christchurch in Dorset.

We started off at Hengistbury Head and walked along the beach by the crashing waves to Mudeford Sandbank, home to rows and rows of pretty pastel beach huts. I can't tell you how wonderful it was to feel the sunshine on my face and take my coat off!! All the while listening to the sound of the waves....So please forgive me if I got a little trigger happy - I haven't been outside much lately ;)

I bought a Blythe with me (Simply Peppermint) for some pastel beach hut shots - a lovely combo! We tried some posing on the sand, but that didn't work so well and she took a bit of a nose dive into the sand ;)

It really was a taste of summer. Everyone was eating icecreams, the dogs were out in force and the kiddies were building sandcastles. A magical day!

I absolutely adore the beach huts here. Whilst some were still boarded up from the winter, lots of families were using them - lolling around reading and playing in the sand. I'd love to rent one in the summer.

I think I could photograph beach huts all day long and not get bored! Al had to drag me away :) These lovely huts have featured in some previous posts too in case you are interested: Summer 2013 and October 2011. And I've been spamming Instagram like mad with beach huts!!

There really is nothing finer than feeling the sun on your face whilst listening to the waves crash and roll and crash and roll - I love the rhythm of nature.

If you fancy taking a little slice of the seaside home with you, feel free to have a browse through my Seaside collection in my Red Bubble print shop. There's a Blythe section too.

Have a lovely week everyone - let's hope the sunshine continues!

Glistening golden Acadia

So before autumn says its final farewells, I thought it would be good to share the third leg of our fabulous USA trip, in all its autumn glory. From Vermont, we enjoyed a very scenic (and rather epic) drive to Mount Desert Island in Maine. We stayed in another lovely Airbnb place in pretty Somesville - the perfect location from which to explore the stunning Acadia National Park. The Park had been shut, along with all the other national parks and monuments, as part of the government shutdown in October. Luckily for us, it reopened a few days before we arrived and I am so thankful it did. Acadia really is the most stunning location, especially in the autumn.

All of an autumn whirl

We were lucky enough to enjoy some days of sunshine and it just transformed the autumn landscape into a magical glistening, golden, sparkling wonderland. There really is nothing quite like it. Dancing dappled light, golden warmth, fiery leaves - it really is tonic for the soul.

Walking the red carpet in Acadia National Park

You access most of Acadia National Park via a very well maintained Park Loop Road. Even just driving round this is something very special indeed. But we like to walk in the dappled light, feel the sun on our faces and play in the fallen leaves. So we did. Rather a lot :)

We spent a lot of time with cameras glued to our faces, as well as with our heads staring up - there was so much to look at, every which way!

There was an absolutely stunning tree just outside where we were staying in Somesville, which was ablaze with colour. I'd love a carpet of pretty maple leaves, please :)

Autumn girls
Hello!

There is so much to see in Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island - I can highly recommend a visit. The coastal scenery is absolutely stunning too - but that's another post or this will never end! You can see the rest of my photos in my Mount Desert Island set on Flickr. I'll leave you with some shots of Jordan Pond and it's beautiful crystal clear water, Somesville and its pretty bridge, and a beautiful sunset at Southwest Harbour.

A sunny summer Sunday stroll

I hope you're all enjoying this gorgeous summer weather we've been having! So very lovely to have day after day of sunshine and blue skies - tonic for the soul indeed.

Sunbathing in the Botanic Garden, Oxford

The lovely Candy Pop and I ventured out last Sunday for a stroll around Oxford in the sunshine - what a scorcher!

We started out in the beautiful Botanic Garden - everything's out in full bloom, so there was colour everywhere you looked. I bought a Blythe along with me for some summer shots and we managed to find a pretty spot in the shade for a pic or two :)

After some sparkling limonata and a superfood salad al fresco in the cool breeze, we headed onwards to the beautiful and peaceful Magdalen College (oh and there may have been a short pit stop to acquire a gorgeous minty owl vase on the way....). Plenty of quiet, shady spots here for some outfit shots. Oh and some of the deer had wandered unusually close by, so we got a bonus peek of these beautiful shy creatures (but sadly no pics - wrong lens on at the time...). Photos of me taken by the very lovely Candy Pop.

What I'm wearing: top - Anthropologie (many moons ago) | denim skirt - Howies (also many moons ago) | Birkies | hoop handled bag made from vintage fabrics - Reloved Preloved (one of many - I *adore* these bags :)

We stopped for a little rest in the shade on the lawn and I couldn't get over how immaculate the grass looked - lots of love and care has clearly gone into tending this. It also made a fabulous backdrop for some more Blythe shots.

Well that's all for now folks - back soon with some more summery photos. Hope you're all enjoying this fabulous sunshine and managing to stay cool! Z x

Friday Favourites ~ Teal with a splash of happy yellow

I'm loving all things teal at the moment (might be something to do with a recent Blythe purchase...) and think it's a perfect partner for a happy splash of yellow. Especially important on such grotty days as today - it's all windy and rainy and grey outside - what happened to summer?! So I thought it would be nice to brighten things up inside with all these lovely items from a talented bunch of Etsyians. Enjoy and have a fabulous long weekend!
